First edition. One of six volumes comprising a landmark zoological series by the pioneering Danish naturalist and educator, Frederik Christian Kielsen (1774-1850), designed to illustrate distinct systematic biological groups. This volume features fine engraved plates of insects and other invertebrates (including Crustacea and Myriapoda), classified according to the Linnaean system.

Condition

8vo, cont. plain, paper-covered boards, neatly rebacked with later matching cloth and leather title piece. Small marginal water stain to title page. Occasional light foxing. Contemporary pencilled title to corner of upper board. Scientific names added in pencil to plates illustrating beetles.

Provenance: Ownership stamp of Dr. Elling Holst (1849-1915), notable Norwegian mathematician, author, and son of bookseller, Adolph Theodor Holst; bookplate of Swedish coleopterist Reinhold Charpentier (fl. 1965-1985).
