Description:

Text Chinese, names in Latin. National Nature Reserve Biodiversity Conservation Series. This guide is an authoritative guide to the butterfly diversity of the Chebaling National Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province, part of the National Nature Reserve Biodiversity Conservation Series. Based on the first comprehensive grid-based butterfly diversity survey project launched in 2020, the book integrates traditional morphological identification with molecular biology techniques, revealing for the first time the baseline status and genetic characteristics of butterfly resources in the region. The book includes 300 butterfly species from 5 families within the reserve, including swallowtails, white butterflies, nymphalids, blue butterflies, and skippers. It features 225 newly recorded species and five new records for Guangdong Province, such as the Northern Yellow White, the Eastern Bean White, the Yellow-spotted White, the Blue-crowned Blue, and the Lesser Ochre Skipper. Particularly noteworthy are the records of rare species such as the Golden Birdwing (a Class I protected wild animal in China) and the Black-purple Nymphalid (a Class II protected wild animal in China). This illustrated guide utilises a combination of DNA barcoding and sequencing technology with species identification to provide molecular identification evidence for some key and difficult-to-identify species. It systematically analyses the species diversity and community distribution characteristics of butterflies at different altitudinal gradients. The study found that butterfly communities within the reserve have significant ecological indicator value, providing crucial scientific evidence for assessing ecosystem health. Furthermore, the book constructs a morphology-molecular collaborative identification technology system, providing a standardised method for biodiversity monitoring in my country's subtropical forest ecosystems. This illustrated guide is not only an important achievement in butterfly diversity research in the Chebaling Reserve but also provides crucial first-hand data and theoretical decision-making support for insect diversity research in typical ecosystems and insect diversity conservation efforts in protected areas in my country. The publication of the Illustrated Guide of Butterflies in Chebaling will lay the foundation for future in-depth diversity and ecosystem interaction research, while also providing a scientific reference for biodiversity conservation and ecological civilisation construction.
