Description:

An important early monograph on the iron-depositing bacteria, bringing together Ellis's investigations of organisms including Leptothrix, Gallionella, Crenothrix and Spirophyllum. These microorganisms were of particular interest for their role in the precipitation and deposition of iron, with implications for the formation of bog iron ores and other geological deposits, as well as for water supplies, reservoirs and the fouling of pipes. David Ellis (1874-1937), was Professor of Bacteriology at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, a leading authority on iron and sulphur-bacteria. This work represents an early contribution to what would later develop into the field of geomicrobiology.
