- Publisher : Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
- Illustrations : 33 col plates
Description:
A facsimile edition of the work originally published in 3 parts, 1849-1851, from a copy held in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Published to celebrate the life and achievements of Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911), the distinguished British botanist and explorer who served as Director of Kew from 1865 to 1885. The work documents the rhododendrons discovered during Hooker’s explorations of India and the Himalayas between 1848 and 1851, illustrated with exquisite botanical plates by the celebrated artist Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892). Hooker collected thousands of plant specimens during these expeditions, including numerous previously undescribed rhododendrons. Their publication introduced Victorian audiences to a remarkable diversity of these plants, helping to stimulate a widespread enthusiasm for rhododendrons that transformed British gardens and horticulture.
This edition includes a new introduction examining Hooker’s travels in India, the publication of his botanical work, and his lasting influence on British gardening and horticulture.
