Description:
Text Spanish. Pehr Löfling (1729-1756) was a gifted Swedish botanist and one of the most promising students of Carl Linnaeus. Löfling joined the Spanish Expedición de Límites al Orinoco (1754-1781), tasked with determining and securing the territorial boundaries of the Spanish Empire in the Orinoco River region. As the expedition's chief naturalist, Löfling documented hundreds of plant species from the Guayana region, many new to European science; he also collected new species of fish and invertebrates. Following his untimely death, his manuscripts and illustrations were safeguarded by his two assistants, eventually returning to Spain, where they are now preserved at the Real Jardín Botánico in Madrid.
