However, the larvae represent their species just as ‘worthily’ as the adults, and they often play an ecological role at least as important as the latter in the ecosystems in which they live.

This work will finally allow us to take into account larvae and eggs in field studies on French Amphibians.

The texts and determination keys of this new edition have been significantly revised thanks to the consultation of many amateur and professional naturalist experts. Two new species have been added to the taxonomic list. The illustrations have been modernized, and the quality of the photographs improved thanks to technological developments and the mobilization of many naturalist photographers who have provided us with new shots.

This guide is intended for scientists, whether or not they are specialists in Amphibians, professionals in planning and the environment, naturalists, teachers and students in life sciences and the general public interested in a better understanding of Amphibians.

[Pour les Amphibiens, ou Batraciens, tout comme pour les Insectes et d'autres groupes d'animaux à métamorphose, l'attention des biologistes, et à fortiori des non-spécialistes, s'est longtemps concentrée sur les adultes, beaux papillons ou bruyantes rainettes.

Pourtant, les larves représentent leurs espèces tout autant "dignement" que les adultes, et elles jouent souvent un rôle écologique au moins aussi important que ces derniers dans les écosystèmes où elles vivent.

Cet ouvrage permettra enfin de prendre en compte les larves et les œufs dans les études de terrain sur les Amphibiens de France.

Les textes et les clés de détermination de cette nouvelle édition ont été fortement remaniés grâce à la consultation de nombreux experts naturalistes amateurs et professionnels. Deux nouvelles espèces s’ajoutent à la liste taxonomique. Les illustrations ont été modernisées et la qualité des photographies améliorée grâce aux évolutions technologiques et à la mobilisation de nombreux photographes naturalistes qui nous ont fourni de nouvelles prises de vue.
