Description:

This first edition of Les Papillons is a rare find, particularly in its original wrappers. This charming work on the natural history of butterflies and moths was written by Eugène Amédée Balland (1796–1829), a French bookseller and journalist. An instructive volume, it is aimed at a young audience, and introduces the natural history, collecting methods, and preservation of butterflies. It reflects the burgeoning interest in natural history during the 19th century, an era when scientific exploration and the categorization of natural specimens became a popular pursuit. Balland's desire to inspire a younger generation in natural sciences, align with broader Enlightenment and Romantic values that emphasized education and the wonder of nature. The book stands at the intersection of science, education and leisure, contributing to the popularization of entomology.

Eugène Amédée Balland (1796-1829), was a French bookseller and journalist from Rouen. He founded and edited, with Léon Thiessé, the periodical 'Lettres Normandes, ou Petit Tableau moral, politique et littéraire' and published 'L'Observateur des modes' from 1818 to 1823, while working at the Parisian printing press of Jean-Roch Lottin de Saint-Germain. He also wrote a number of popular works and books for young people. He was a bookseller in Paris from 1825.
