Description:

First edition. The original wrappers illustrate collecting equipment. The charming frontispiece shows three young people engaged in collecting and preparing butterfly specimens. The attractive engraved plates (two of which have the name of the engraver, Joseph Julien Dulompré) of butterflies and moths are brightly hand-coloured.

Eugène Amédée Balland (1796-1829), was a French bookseller and journalist from Rouen. He founded and edited, with Léon Thiessé, the periodical 'Lettres Normandes, ou Petit Tableau moral, politique et littéraire' and published 'L'Observateur des modes' from 1818 to 1823, while working at the Parisian printing press of Jean-Roch Lottin de Saint-Germain. He also wrote a number of popular works and books for young people. He was a bookseller in Paris from 1825.

Rare. Not in Horn-Schenkling or Nissen.

Condition

Oblong small quarto (194x252mm), recent green half calf, gt, marbled boards, original printed pink wrappers retained.
