Description:

Text French. A rare and richly illustrated technical manual on the dyeing of cotton and other natural fibers, issued by one of the foremost German chemical manufacturers of the early 20th century. Founded in 1863 in Höchst near Frankfurt by Carl Meister, Eugen Lucius, and Ludwig Brüning, the company Farbwerke vorm. Meister Lucius & Brüning was internationally renowned for its pioneering work in the synthesis of aniline dyes, which revolutionised the textile industry. These exceptional volumes are profusely illustrated with over a thousand mounted colour swatches, demonstrating the application of synthetic dyes on a wide variety of natural fibres. Included are dyed samples of cotton in many forms: calico, velvet, flannel, lining and ball gown fabrics, corset and apron cloth, damask, men's suiting, and cotton lace—alongside examples destined for bedding, table linens, curtains, and hand towels. The work also presents dyed specimens of hemp, jute, raffia, and straw. A superb and visually striking work documenting the state of early 20th-century industrial dyeing practices.
