Description:
Text Spanish, with separate English translation. First published in 1992, this edition commemorates the 200th anniversary of the death of Spanish scientist, José Celestino Mutis (1732-1808). It features updated illustrations, revised nomenclature, and 45 additional plates.
The work celebrates the remarkable collection of botanical illustrations created during an expedition to the Spanish colony of Nuevo Reyno de Granada (New Kingdom of Granada, present-day Columbia), led by Mutis. He first arrived in the Americas as the personal physician to the Viceroy of Granada, but soon devoted himself to the study of local flora, identifying numerous new species and compiling a comprehensive herbal of New World plants.
In 1763, the Spanish crown authorized him to lead a Royal Botanical Expedition into the interior of the colony. Over the next 25 years, Mutis and his team discovered more than 6,000 new plant species and produced over 8,000 botanical illustrations, plans, and maps. These materials were sent to Spain and are now preserved in the Real Jardín Botánico.
