Description:
Fifty Reproductions of Crayon Drawings. Foreword by Arnesby Brown. Introduction, historical and descriptive notes by J. Holland Walker.
Thomas William Hammond (1854-1935) was born in Philadelphia to Nottingham émigrés and later returned to England with his sister Maria. At the age of 14, in 1868, he enrolled at the Government School of Art, and by 1871 he was working as a lace designer. A skilled draftsman, Hammond turned his talents to recording the streets and landmarks of Nottingham. In 1890 he exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy. This volume presents 50 of his finely detailed illustrations, offering a vivid record of the old town and its most notable landmarks.
