Quarterly Bulletin of the Alpine Garden Society. Nos. 147–282 (Vol. 35, No.1- Vol. 68, No. 4)
- Publisher : Alpine Garden Society
Description:
An extensive run of this specialist horticultural and botanical journal, comprising 133 issues, from No. 147 (Vol. 35, No.1) to No. 282 (Vol. 68, No. 4), lacking three issues : No. 217 (Vol. 52, No. 3), No. 236 (Vol. 57, No. 2) and No. 237 (Vol. 57, No. 3).
Published quarterly by the Alpine Garden Society, the Bulletin is an important record of the development of alpine horticulture and the study of mountain flora during the second half of the twentieth century. The Society, founded in 1929, established an international reputation as a leading organisation for the study, cultivation and conservation of alpine plants.
The journal is international in scope, with contributions from botanists, horticulturists, plant explorers and specialist growers documenting the flora of mountainous regions throughout the world. Its contents encompass botanical descriptions, accounts of plant-hunting expeditions, geographical and floristic studies, cultivation and propagation techniques, and observations on the introduction and development of plants in cultivation. It consequently provides a valuable historical and practical reference for the study of alpine plants and the evolution of specialist rock gardening.
An especially attractive feature is the extensive photographic illustration throughout the run. Early issues are illustrated with black-and-white photographs, with colour photography introduced in 1986, considerably enhancing the visual presentation of the plants and their natural habitats.
