This book analyses some 40,000 records of rare vagrants to Britain and Ireland between 1700 and 1990. It itemises each and every record of those species recorded on 500 occasions or less in Britain and also includes records up to 1994 of those that have been recorded less than 100 times. It includes all records that the author himself believes to be authenticated and in general, follows the decisions made by the British Ornithologists Union Records Committee and the British Birds Rarities Committee between 1958 and 1990. A total of 354 species are covered , including all thosse recorded in a wild state as vagrants and those being either certain or possible escapes from captivity. Rare subspecies records are also included.
