Charming woodcuts by Luke Clennel and engravings after paintings by him. Clennell (1781-1840) was an artist and wood-engraver. He began his artistic career in the workshop of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), where he trained for 7 years. Bewick was then at the height of his powers, having just put to press his first volume of the celebrated British Birds. Before long, was contributing to the production of the second volume of the Birds. Following the apprenticeship with Bewick, Clennell illustrated many books, including the present work, and others, including novels by Smollett and Sterne.
