William Botting Hemsley (1843–1924) was a British botanist who began working at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, at the age of 16. He retired in 1867 due to ill health but returned in 1874, where he undertook research on plant material collected during the renowned oceanographic 'Challenger' Expedition, this publication was one of his most significant contributions to botany.
Condition
4to (327x265mm), orig. green cloth, bevelled boards, rubbed, minor wear, gilt title to spine, orig. paper title label (chipped & worn) to foot of spine, new brown endpapers. Withdrawn from an institutional library with a few small, neat ink stamps to preliminaries and verso of final plate, otherwise very clean. Small stamp to title page states, 'Presented by the Lords of the Treasury'. Vg.
