Description:

Transactions of the Linnean Society of London. Zoology. 2nd Series Vol. 12-16. Led by John Stanley Gardiner, (1872-1946), the ‘Percy Sladen Trust Expedition’ was conceived to test ideas on coral island formation and related questions by undertaking an extensive exploration of the southern parts of the Indian Ocean. The Admiralty made the expedition possible by placing the surveying vessel H.M.S. Sealark at Gardiner’s disposal for six months of the summer of 1905, other aspects of the expedition were funded by the Percy Sladen Trust. The Sealark was a three-masted vessel with a complement of 100 officers and crew, under the command of Commander Boyle T. Somerville, a distinguished hydrographer. The expedition started from Colombo on May 1905 sailing south visiting many of the islands and reefs lying between Addu, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives and Mauritius, then sailed northwards towards the Seychelles. The results of the cruise were published in eight quarto volumes containing 141 separate reports by leading authors, all edited by Gardiner, five volumes are presented here.
