Description:
Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India, Palaeontologia Indica, being figures and descriptions of the organic remains procured during the progress of the geological survey of India.
Scarce. An important early contribution to Indian vertebrate palaeontology by Robert Bruce Foote (1834-1912), pioneering geologist and archaeologist. Contains the original description of Rhinoceros deccanensis Foote, 1874, based on fossil remains discovered by the author in 1871 near Gokak, southern India. The remains, including a series of large mammalian teeth, were found embedded in a deposit of black clay, approximately eight feet below the surface. Foote concluded that they represented a previously undescribed species of rhinoceros, which he named Rhinoceros deccanensis, after the Deccan region of India. Illustrated with 3 lithographic plates depicting the fossil material.
