In 1880, at the age of twenty-seven, the influential French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) arrived in Harar, on the desert borders of Eastern Ethiopia, He remained there for a number of years trading in coffee and firearms. Ninety-seven years later, a young French writer, poet, Alain Borer also aged twenty-seven, arrived in Harar. He crisscrossed the country which resulted in this essay and travel journal.
