Description:
First trade edition, first issue, with printing error in the 'List of Illustrations' (p. 20), which erroneously indexes Eric Kennington's double-page line drawing 'A Forced Landing' as appearing on pages 302-303; the illustration actually occurs within the text block across pages 304-305. This error was corrected in subsequent issues.
O'Brien A042.
Condition
Crown 4to (260x190mm), original publisher's brown buckram, spine titled in gilt, upper board with the iconic crossed-swords device, top edge tinted brown, as issued, other edges uncut. Very good. Cloth boards remarkably fresh with bright gilt detailing. Spine shows slight, uniform fading, though spine lettering remains sharp. Occasional foxing. Provenance: armorial bookplate of the original owner, John Chetwode Chetwood-Aiken (1873-1955), descendant of a prominent Bristol banking family.
