Description:
An attractive late-Victorian edition of Washington Irving’s classic evocation of Moorish Spain. Originally published 1832, as The Alhambra: A Series of Tales and Sketches of the Moors and Spaniards. The 1896 edition is noted for the atmospheric illustrations by one of the leading book illustrators of the time, Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), whose richly detailed drawings capture the romantic architecture, courtyards, and mystery of the Alhambra. Combining travel narrative, legend, and historical reflection, this edition remains one of the most attractive illustrated presentations of Irving’s work. It also includes an introduction by Pennell’s wife, the author Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936).
