Summarises available knowledge on the almost 1,500 species known from the region (Mauritania, Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Niger). For each species: distribution in West Africa and Africa as a whole, habitats and behaviour, early stages and foodplants; genitalia drawings for difficult species. 20 new species described. This is the most in-depth treatment of butterfly species for these countries. Now very scarce.
