First edition. Rare. An important volume featuring chapters by leading naturalists, game wardens, and colonial-era hunters with first-hand experience of elephants throughout East Central Africa. Its contents span evolution, anatomy, reproduction, and regional studies of elephants in the Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, the Belgian Congo, and Tanganyika, as well as a survey of the African elephant in history. Notably, the work includes the first complete anatomical diagram of an elephant. The book is dedicated to the Maharaja of Mysore, who was known for his great interest in and enthusiasm for the elephant.
