Description:
First edition. Rare. David Smith (18191-892), a Halifax-based dyer and manufacturing chemist, established his own firm in 1867 and worked at the critical juncture between the age of natural dyes and the rise of synthetic colourants. This practical manual reflects that transition, containing examples of both traditional and new aniline dyes. In the preface, Smith proudly affirms: 'I have dyed every pattern in this work with my own hands...' - a testament to the personal craftsmanship underpinning this industrial art.
