Description:
The Hydrobiidae is the most diverse family of freshwater gastropods in the West Palaearctic region. In Vol. III 148 genera and more than 740 species are depicted with nearly 2050 photographs. Many new species were described during preparation of this volume and these have been considered up to the end of February 2021. As with Vol. II, syn-, holo-, para-, and topotypes have been used wherever possible. Identifications with type materials are important because many species look similar at first glance but are distinct.
The first identification key for the freshwater gastropods of the West Palaearctic, taking into consideration the progress of malacological research of recent decades. Nearly all species have been depicted with high-quality photos and in a way that species identification is possible. Additional descriptions and identification keys, which refer to the typical characters of the species, support the depictions. For most species, photos of the anatomy are provided.
