Description:

First editions. Parallel English / French text. Genera Insectorum with engraved title in English (with hand-coloured engraving), printed title in French; Genera Vermium with engraved title to Pt I in French, printed title in English; Pt II engraved title only (in English). Scarce, particularly as a set, and with both parts of Genera Vermium.

Condition

3 parts, bound in two, 4to, uniform cont. half calf, recently sympathetically rebacked, gilt rules, blind-stamped, decorative shell motif to compartments, original leather title pices preserved, marbled boards (rubbed), endpapers and edges. Occasional minor spotting and offsetting. Vg. Provenance: Armorial book plate of William Battell, together with ownership inscription noting purchase date of 1799, and price of each volume ('1:9:0' and '1:0:0'); also with manuscript note in his hand outlining the characters of the seven orders of insects pasted to flyleaf; Armorial bookplate of H.F. Davies, Elmley Castle.
