First edition, apparantly the second issue with the Chilean Dotterel as frontispiece; however, the plates appear well-coloured in this copy. A classic monograph of the family Charadriidae of the world. The hand-coloured lithographic plates are by J.G. Keulemans, printed by Hanhart/Judd & Co., and show birds which had not been figured before, or of which good figures were lacking. Wood engravings to text by J.G. Millais.

4to, orig. green pebbled cloth, gt title to front cover and spine, black-stamped border to front cover; minor wear, small bruise to spine. Front hinge cracked and slightly strained. Occasional minor foxing to text. Plates clean and bright. Very good.
