The Green Eagles of Calshot
- Publisher : Edwin Shipley
Description:
A well-illustrated history of RAF Calshot, the principal centre of British flying-boat development and training, written by Group Captain Edwin Shipley, himself a pre-war RAF flying-boat officer who trained at Calshot. Shipley traces the site from Henry VIII's coastal defences through the beginnings of naval aviation and the development of RAF seaplanes and flying boats, with particular attention to the aircraft, personalities, training and pioneering long-distance flights associated with the station.
The title of the book refers to the distinctive greenish colour acquired by the metal cap badges of RAF flying-boat officers through corrosion caused by exposure to sea salt, making them readily identifiable as flying-boat pilots.
