This oceanographic expedition was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Beresford Seymour Sewell (1880-1964), a military doctor and naturalist. Funded by a bequest from the Scottish oceanographer, the Sir John Murray (1841-1914), the expedition, aboard the Egyptian research vessel HEMS Mabahiss was a joint British and Egyptian maritime venture. Setting sail from Alexandria on 3rd September, 1933 the ship sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, and the Indian and Arabian Oceans on a nine-month journey. The expedition was noted for the scientific data accumulated and natural history collections made in cross sections between the African and Arabian coasts of the Gulf.
