First edition. Edited by Robert Gray, Bishop of Cape Town. Taken from the journals and diaries of Archdeacon Nathaniel James Merriman (1809-1882) (later the third Bishop of Grahamstown), during his time as a missionary in the lands of the Cape Colony. Contains a lively account of the peoples and landscape from the early history of South Africa.
Condition
8vo, orig. brown, blind-stamped cloth, gilt title to spine and front board. Small ink stain to front board, spine crudely repaired with brown paper. Internally sound. Rear free endpaper removed, newspaper cutting with poem in memory of Bishop Merriman pasted to rear endpaper. Folding map with a few creases and short tear neatly repaired to inner edge. Manuscript letter pasted to first page of publisher's catalogue at rear, signed 'W.W. Capetown' [William West Jones (1838-1908), first Archbishop of Cape Town], addressed to Esther Louise Greathead, youngest daughter of Nathaniel James Merriman. Signatures of both 'W.W. Capetown' and E.L. Greathead to endpaper. From the library of D.J. Greathead (1931-2006), British dipterist, and great grandson of Bishop Merriman, with his initials.
