Description:

This work tells the story of the first successful ascent of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, by a British expedition in 1955, while also tracing the decades of failed attempts that preceded it. One of the book's central figures is Joe Brown, an exceptionally talented working-class climber from Manchester whose inclusion in the expedition challenged the traditional social makeup of British mountaineering. Together with George Band, Brown reached the summit area on 25th May 1955. In keeping with a promise made to the Chogyal (Maharaja) of Sikkim, they stopped just short of the highest point out of respect for the mountain's sacred status, a tradition that climbers on Kangchenjunga generally continue today.
