Description:

Division VII of The Museum of Natural History (1859-1862), by Sir John Richardson et al., covering the Insects (pp. 175-284). Plates by Nathaniel J. Holmes, engraved by J.W. Lowry. A printed slip tipped in at front states that the work, 'Will be completed in Eight Divisions, substantially bound in cloth, gilt edges, Price 8s. 6d. each. Subscribers will be held bound to take the complete work of eight divisions.' It was originally anticipated to be issued in about twenty parts, each containing 'Five Plates and Thirty-two pages of Letterpress' (from publisher's sampler and order book in our possession). When completed the work was sold, bound variously in 2 vols, 4 vols (Divisions), or 8 vols (Divisions).

Condition

Imp. 8vo, orig. brown, blind- and gilt-stamped cloth, slightly rubbed to extremities aeg; front inner hinge cracked and slightly tender; old faint damp stain to bottom edge of first plate and occasionally to outer margin of text pages. Good. Armorial bookplate of Colonel Percy Theobald, Bournside, Cheltenham.
