All first issues. Donovan originally intended this work to be complete in 10 volumes, however, several years after publication of volume 10, he decided to continue the work, and a further six volumes were published. This set lacks the final three volumes. Includes fine, mostly hand-coloured engraved plates (the 7 plates of microscopic organisms were usually uncoloured, however in this set, Plate XI: Acarus coleoptratorum - Beetle Tick is fully hand-coloured, and Plate ).

Condition
13 (of 16) vols, 8vo (256x160mm), finely bound in recent antique style green half morocco, with raised bands, gilt tooling and red leather title pieces to spines, marbled boards and endpapers; edges uncut. Occasional light foxing, mostly to tissue guards; a few text leaves lightly browned. An attractive and handsomely bound set.
