An important early study of plant colonisation and ecological succession, based on Alfred Ernst’s (1875-1968) expedition to Krakatau in 1906 and earlier botanical investigations of the islands such as Melchior Treub’s pioneering surveys of 1886, following the catastrophic eruption of 1883. Krakatau provided an exceptional natural experiment in the re-establishment of vegetation on an island believed to have been stripped of its former flora. Ernst examined the developing vegetation and the relative importance of ocean currents, wind and birds in the dispersal of seeds and other plant material, making the work a classic contribution to island biogeography and the emerging science of plant ecology.
