Description:
William Allen Sturge (1850-1919) was a physician who, following his retirement to Icklingham, Suffolk, in 1907, devoted himself to the study of archaeology, with the active support of his second wife. Over the ensuing years, he assembled a distinguished collection of flint implements, sourced both from his own collecting activities and from other prominent collections, including those of Canon Greenwell, Allen Brown, and Worthington Smith. Upon his death, Sturge bequeathed his collection to the British Museum. A comprehensive catalogue of the collection was subsequently published in two volumes: Vol. I (1931) documented the British material, while Vol. II (presented here) described flint implements from Europe, Africa, and Egypt.
