Despite the title, the book ranges well beyond Paris and Montparnasse, recording Gibbings's travels and experiences in France and Italy, including the Ile de Re, Venice and Positano. Written in his engagingly discursive manner, it combines travel, landscape, natural history, local history, anecdote and encounters with people along the way.

Of particular interest is Gibbings's renewed enthusiasm for painting in colour. Best known for his distinctive black-and-white wood engravings, he here illustrates the narrative both with his characteristic engravings and with eight colour reproductions of his paintings, giving the book an unusually broad representation of his work as an artist.
