Complete in two parts with 6 folding maps in rear pocket of Pt I. As usual the folding map (Plate 107), folding map of India, in Pt II is bound in, not loose in a rear pocket as called for on the Contents page. Part I. Geology. Contains four large papers: The origin and nature of soils, by N.S, Shaler; The Lafayette Formation, by W. J. Mcgee; The North American continent during Cambrian time, by C.D. Walcott; The eruptive rocks of Electric Peak and Sepulchre Mountain, Yellowstone National Park, by J.P. Liddings; Part II. Irrigation. Contains three large papers: Report upon the location and survey of reservoir sites during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1891, by A.H. Thompson; Hydrography of the Arid Regions, by F.H. Newell; Irrigation in India, by Herbert M. Wilson. The United States Geological Survey was established by an act of Congress in 1879 and was charged with the 'classification of the public lands and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain'. The Twelfth Annual Report was produced by John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) who served as the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1881–1894. The two volumes contain a series of important papers, accompanied with fascinating black and white photographs, illustrations and maps.

Condition

2 vols, 4to, orig. cloth, rubbed, scuffed and a little worn; slighty shaken, hinges a little slack, with a few preliminary pages loose in Pt I. 'Duplicate' in manuscript to both endpapers, otherwise a good, clean and complete set of this Annual Report.
