The Pentatomomorpha are subdivided into five superfamilies: Aradoidea (bark bugs), Lygaeoidea (ground bugs and related families), Pyrrhocoroidea (firebugs), Coreoidea (edge bugs and related families), Pentatomoidea (shield bugs and related families).

In the Netherlands, these account for 223 of the 680 observed species. These are covered in this field guide together with 24 potentially expected species from adjacent areas in Belgium and Germany.

For each species, information is provided on identification, biology, distribution, and phenology. One or more habitus photographs are included for all species.

Species from common but difficult-to-identify genera can be easily identified, particularly thanks to the clear identification key (illustrated with very detailed photographs).

The guide is intended for anyone who wants to know more about true bugs, and in particular about the Dutch Pentatomomorpha. It is of interest to garden and insect enthusiasts, landscapers, horticulture and agricultural specialists, entomologists, biologists, students of green education programs, and nature and land managers.

In Nederland zijn dat 223 van de 680 waargenomen soorten. Deze worden samen met 24 mogelijk te verwachten soorten uit aangrenzende gebieden in België en Duitsland in deze veldgids behandeld. Per soort wordt informatie gegeven over herkenning, biologie, verspreiding en fenologie. Van alle soorten zijn één of meer habitusfoto’s opgenomen. Soorten van veel voorkomende, maar lastig te herkennen genera, zijn vooral vanwege de duidelijke determinatiesleutel (geïllustreerd met zeer gedetailleerde foto's) goed op naam te brengen. De gids is bedoeld voor iedereen die meer wil weten over wantsen en in het bijzonder over de Nederlandse Pentatomomorpha.
