Description:

First edition. Scarce variant with plain end-papers (but in this copy the final page of the Index acts as the rear pastedown endpaper). This was the first volume in the series to be published with patterned endpapers, but a small batch of the first edition (of which this is one) were bound with plain endpapers: apparently the binder ran out of patterned endpapers and as an expedient used plain stock. The plain-paper variant is much rarer.
