Description:

13 volumes, together with Supplementary No to Vol. X, the latter comprising of a 366-page work on the trematode blood fluke Cercariae indica by R.B. Seymour Sewell. The journal commenced publication in 1913, the first editor being Sir Pardey Lukis (1857-1917). The Editorial note in the first volume explains why this journal was launched. ‘ At present there is in India no periodical devoted entirely to the publication of research work connected with sanitation and the prevention of disease. Most of the papers, therefore, on this very wide range off subjects, either remain more or less buried in the files of Government offices, find their way into the general medical or surgical papers or are scattered over a variety of very specialised journals in England and Europe’.

The journal continues to be published to this day, it is one of the oldest Asian medical journals. In its early years the journal focused on tropical medicine and pathology, publishing papers by British and Indian researchers on malaria and its transmission by mosquitoes, filariasis, kalazar, leprosy, the plague, syphilis, snake bites and nutritional disorders, etc.
