Synopsis:
Five new species collected by Alfred Russel Wallace and deposited in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History are described: Oedichirus wallacei sp. n. (Paederinae) from Borneo and Hesperus bugis sp. n., Hesperus minahasa sp. n., Hesperus ruficaudata sp. n. and Hesperus wallacei sp. n. (Staphylininae) from Celebes. New data for three other species (of Hesperus and Creophilus) are given.

Synopsis:
After almost 230 years, the generic name Orthezia [Bosc d’Antic] and the specific name characias [Bosc d’Antic] have been validated by the plenary power of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN Opinion 2387). The history and subsequent spellings of the generic name are discussed and some corrections to the citations of the names are reviewed.
