Trapping confirms aerial recruitment of pine tortoise scale (Toumeyella parvicornis (Cockerell)) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) in the Turks and Caicos Islands

By: CHRIS MALUMPHY, MARTIN A. HAMILTON, MICHELE D. SANCHEZ & PAUL W.C. GREEN

Page: 193-200

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
The highly invasive Nearctic pine tortoise scale (Toumeyella parvicornis (Cockerell)) has devastated the pine forests of the Turks and Caicos Islands and there are now relatively few live Caicos pine trees remaining. In order to understand the rapid spread of the insect and confirm circumstantial evidence of wind dispersal of the first instar or crawler stage, sticky traps were deployed in three of the Turks and Caicos Islands during May 2014. Crawlers were recorded on most of the traps and although the numbers caught varied, the insects trapped per day did not vary significantly between Pine Cay, Middle and North Caicos. These data indicate the sustained airborne recruitment of the first instars into the pine forests and that isolation of healthy trees does not prevent the risk of infestation. The factors that are likely to have facilitated the rapid spread of the scale insect across the Turks and Caicos Islands are discussed.
