A new British mayfly: Siphlonurus aestivalis (Eaton, 1903) (Ephemeroptera: Siphlonuridae)

Synopsis:
The mayfly Siphlonurus aestivalis is described as new to the British Isles, confirmed by morphological features and DNA barcoding. A key to the British Siphlonuridae is presented together with a review of British records of S. aestivalis and S. armatus. Siphlonurus aestivalis appears to be widely distributed and is likely to be recorded in further locations. S. armatus is now only known from a single location.

Foiling crypsis: Surveying Lepidoptera caterpillars with UV light

This paper investigates the use of UV light (385–395nm) to detect lepidopteran caterpillars in ecological surveys. This is a relatively rapid, inexpensive, non-invasive and straightforward technique that could be used for ecological surveys including citizen science projects.

The literature on the Anthomyiidae of the Maltese Islands is reviewed. A total of 22 species are listed, of which two are rejected and 10 are recorded for the first time. Species are annotated with new data where this is available. The fauna is briefly discussed in its geographical context. All species are common and widespread around the Mediterranean.
