Description:
Illinois Biological Monographs, Vol. IX, Nos 2-3. A pioneering work on the Microsporidia, representing the first comprehensive biological and systematic treatment of this group of obligate intracellular parasites. Kudo reviewed their morphology, development, host relationships and classification, treating some 178 species and establishing a framework that remained fundamental to microsporidian taxonomy for more than half a century. Richard Roksabro Kudo (1886-1967) was a Japanese-born American protozoologist and parasitologist who spent much of his academic career at the University of Illinois. A specialist in the Protozoa, and particularly in the Microsporidia, he became an influential authority on their taxonomy and biology and later wrote the widely used textbook Protozoology. This 1924 monograph was one of his most important early contributions and helped establish his reputation as a leading specialist in the field.
