The author carried out two extended trips to South Africa to collect botanical specimens: the first for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 1928-29; the second in 1930, in the company of Field-Marshal Smuts, to Lake Tanganyika, via Zimbabwe, and the Victoria Falls. This book gives a detailed account of his journeys and botanical discoveries. John Hutchinson (1884-1972) was an English botanist, who worked for the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, from 1904-1948.
