Assisted by John Bird, Artist. Second Edition. Large paper copy. 100 ordinary copies and 15 large paper copies in list of Subscribers' names. George Young was born near Edinburghwith the disability of lacking a hand. He overcame this incapacity, studying at the University of Edinburgh where he distinguished himself in mathematics and natural philosophy. He was a favourite of Professor John Playfair a promoter of James Hutton's ideas of uniformitarian geology. Young later studied theology and became the pastor Whitby.
Young published 22 books on a range of topics but is best known for this work, A Geological Survey of the Yorkshire Coast. In this work he was assisted by a local artist, John Bird. (1768-1829). A Contemporary geologist Martin Simpson described Young's Geological Survey as "in every way worthy of a pupil of the celebrated Playfair."
Condition
4to (307x245mm), rebound in modern half calf, raised band to spine, marbled boards. Title browned and spotted with small ink stamp to verso (United Presbyterian Library); occasional spotting and offsetting elsewhere. Author's inscription to vero of title, 'Secession Church Student Library from the Authror, Whitby, Septr. 4, 1844'.
