Description:

Vol.1 text, Vol. 2 plates. Thomas Hincks (1818-1899) was a leading British authority on hydroids and bryozoans He provided the first major systematic synthesis of the British hydroid fauna, bringing together descriptions, synonymy, morphology, reproductive structures and distribution of the species then known. The work is illustrated with 67 plain engraved plates. The author notes in the preface, ‘I have had the zealous cooperation of Mr. Tuffen West, who has spared no pains in the execution of the engravings, and whose practical acquaintance with the subjects delineated, combined with his well-known artistic skill, has enabled him to produce a most satisfactory result’

The work remains a significant source for the original descriptions, nomenclature and historical taxonomy of the Hydrozoa.
