Rare. Part I of this monograph was originally presented as a PhD dissertation at Yale University. The author spent three years in South Africa making extensive collections. A further six years went into the scientific examination of the material thus assembled, resulting in this authoritative monograph.
Grace Evelyn Pickford (1902-1986) joined Yale’s Bingham Oceanographic Laboratory and held various research positions there for 40 years. In 1951 she participated in the deep sea Galathea expedition. In 1969 she was made a full professor of biology at Yale. In 1981 she was awarded Yale’s Wilbur Cross Medal for “outstanding achievement” in professional life.
