Under the General Editorship of Geoffrey Grigson (1905-1985), the complete work provides an evocative overview of the whole of the United Kingdom in the period following the second World War, providing fascinating ‘facts about its scenery, its monuments, its buildings, its natural history, its people and their work and characteristics’. Each volume contains, several illustrations in colour, approximately 50 illustrations in b/w, two relief maps and 14 pages of strip maps, a delightful coloured title page by artists such as Kenneth Rowntree (1915-1997) and Barbara Mildred Jones (1912-1978) and a gazetteer of places and points of special interest.
