First edition. Illustrated by the camera by Oswin A. J. Lee. 'A series of splendid, full-page photogravures showing the nests and nesting sites of some 122 species of British birds. The text consists of a general discussion of the habits of each species with descriptions of the subjects of each plate and the circumstances under which the photograph was taken.' (Zimmer, p. 381). Oswin A. J. Lee (fl. 1890s-1900s) was a British ornithologist and pioneering nature photographer. Originally published in 16 parts, each with 10 plates.

4 vols, folio (390x290mm), cont. half leather, raised bands, gilt-tooled decorations to compartments, gilt titles to spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Extremities rubbed/slightly worn, with some scuffing to the rear of Vol. III. Foxing to fly leaves, occasional light spotting elsewhere. A very good set. From the library of Sir Archibald Orr Ewing (1853–1919), Scottish landowner, soldier, and yachtsman.
