Description:

1st edition. Most copies have a frontispiece, plates 1-37 and an unnumbered plate of Cuff's Microscope. This copy also has plates 38 + 39 (issued later and usually lacking, especially plate 39), an unnumbered plate of Barnacles and plate 14 from Ellis's paper in Phil. Trans. vol. 49.

The first work to state the animal nature of corals, which had previously been regarded as marine plants. Although unsigned, some of the plates are after drawings by Ehret

4to, cont. full calf, corners worn, rebacked, with matching leather spine, raised bands. Some light foxing. Vg copy.
