Description:

From Verhandlungen der k.k. zoologischen-botanischen Gesellschaft Bd XV: 595-782.

Text German. An important early work on the Diptera of Chile and one of Philippi's principal contributions to entomology. It introduced approximately 426 new nominal species and 53 new nominal genera, making it one of the most substantial nineteenth-century contributions to the taxonomy of Chilean flies.

Rodolfo Amando Philippi (1808-1904) was a German-born naturalist who settled in Chile in 1851. He was appointed Professor of Zoology and Botany at the Universidad de Chile and Director of the Museo de Historia Natural, and made fundamental contributions to the study and documentation of the country's flora and fauna.

Philippi treated a wide range of Diptera in the present work and also provided the drawings for the illustrations. The seven engraved plates were executed by Johannes Sonnenleiter (1825-1907), the accomplished Nuremberg-born engraver who settled in Vienna in 1854 and became noted for the precision and delicacy of his work.

The work is conventionally dated 1865 but recent bibliographical research has established that the relevant issue of the Verhandlungen containing Philippi's paper was published on 8 March 1866.

Derksen & Scheiding III p. 276.

8vo, recent red buckram, gilt title to spine. Occasional light foxing. With the ink stamp of La Feuille des Jeunes Naturalistes, the influential French natural history journal founded in 1870, indicating the copy passed through that periodical's reference or editorial collection. Good.
